If you are decorating yourself the first thing is to rid the area of clutter. If it does not belong in the dining room remove it and put it away. There are several styles to choose from when decorating you dining room. The styles are traditional, symmetry, classic, contemporary, and casual/country dining rooms. First decide what makes you comfortable and design and decorate around that. You will create a place that makes you and your guests feel special and pampered.

A Traditional Dining Room does not have to be boring or dull. You can mix and match your furniture with antiques to accent the traditional dining table. As long as the wood matches you can accent the room with different styles. Accenting the dining room with fabrics with a bit of sheen will enhance the traditional setting. This can be with napkins, placemats, tablecloths, window coverings, etc.

A Symmetry dining room is a balanced room. If you have one window in your dining room place a chair on each side, large artwork, add sconce on either side this will add balance and give you a new look. You decorate in threes, one large piece with two smaller ones.

Classic look dining rooms are elegant and refined. By adding mirrors with wide frames or lacquered finishes, accent with a candlestick collection in silver, brass or antique glass. Elegant fabrics, like silk, raw silk, or silk-linen blends will make a formal statement to your dining room.

A Contemporary dining room is stylish and refined with clean lines. You begin with a focal point something big and bold. An oversized print with a simple frame for example. Accessorize with glass tables, stainless steel, brushed aluminum. Choose furniture and accessories that are simple and essentially express their own materials. Contemporary fabrics can include the unusual or the textured­leather, linen, velvet. Lighting is essential in the contemporary setting. Spot lights on artwork or sculptures will add elegance and drama.

A Casual/Country dining room is an informal setting. The textures are rough rather than smooth. Consider easy care fabrics no shiny textiles or dry clean only fabrics. Denims and homespun cottons make you feel at home. Casual fabrics are the same as casual clothing­denim, khaki, flannels... think comfort. In casual dining a mixture of furnishings will relax your room.

No matter what style you choose if you add or change lighting in your dining room the ambiance changes. Adding new window coverings or accents around the room will make a difference. Enjoy and have fun with your new dining room.
